Does the blogging sound unfamiliar for you? Could not be right?

Now you are reading on a blog too. Have said that for the pass few slides , I’ll be focusing in the area on health, mental and social being when blogging.

Here is one question to focus on. Does the blog influence your way of thinking? If is yes, good or bad?

Pro (advantages)

1) Many people having a blog as a diary a way of leaving your memories in content of words.
2) Many would say is a practice for their English composition.
3) It is a place to let one frustrate his anger in words.
4) It could be a place to spread information quickly.

Many many more~

Disadvantages (con)

1)The writer of a blog may violate another person’s privacy or use undesirable language to frustrate his anger. Frequently, it may lead to undesirable dispute.
2) Wrong message conveyed as wrong words may be used.
3)Personal information leak out.
4)One’s feelings may be hurt. If this persists, this may result in cyber bully.
5)The writer may be withdrawing from his friends and only express his true self via blog. Eventually, he might be introvert and his mental health may not be stable if he’s a victim of cyber bully once.

Blog is a way to keep your friends updated about you and your friends. However, when one starts to misuse it, like backstabbing another on a blog, it becomes poison. Think before you write. Don’t write mainly based on your emotions

Buses for the handicaps

Does the buses provide more travel means for handicapped people?

The wheelchair accessible buses (WABs) are equipped with wheelchair ramps to enable easy access for passengers in wheelchairs. A specially-designated area, with a special backrest, low position handrails and a push button for signalling the intention to alight, has been installed to make commuting on public transport more comfortable for passengers in wheelchairs.

These features are being introduced on all new SBS Transit buses, in line with the recommendations by the Committee on Ageing Issues last Wednesday to make all new public buses low-floor, step-free for easy boarding and alighting and wheelchair-accessible. (Comfortdelgro, 2006.)

I came across this article some days ago; it is about this disabled man who wanted to take a WAB bus from Gleneagles Hospital to Dhoby Ghaut. He regretted it saying it was a big mistake, getting his care giver to push him to Orchard MRT would have been faster and cooler.

He said that he waited an hour plus for a service ‘WAB’ bus and that four service 7 non-WAB buses came within that hour. He felt it was ironic because during that hour, the four non-WAB service buses were using ‘WAB’ buses.
On the surface, it may seems to help the disabled greatly, however, its only to a small extent. How about the mute and the deaf? Does WAB helps them too?

Also, WAB do not come on a regular basis. As mention above in paragraph two, the poor man has to wait an hour in the hot sun just to get on a slightly more accessible bus to him. This is so unfair to him and the other handicap people.

I think it still can be made better, in a sense improving the facilities so that more disabled people will choose to take buses instead of the expensive taxi to get from one place to another.

Air Conditioner VS Fan

Well, I will go straight to the point since it obvious what are the pros of air conditioner and fan.

Air condition, many houses are installed with them and few are not switching them on now, in the scorching weather lately.

Although the environmentalist have been calling out to the whole world to cut down the CO2 emission, not many response to their calls due to the scorching weather and habits. Many people knows that switching on the air conditioner is not very environmental friendly as they uses high amount of electricity and releases harmful gases as well.

However, the reason why these people continue using air conditional is because of habits, routine and dependent on them. Some children are growing in the environment whereby air conditioner is always there for them. Hence, it becomes an expensive habit and they are not used to places whereby there's no air-conditioner.

For routine, teens, espcially poly and university, are slowly getting used to the routine that their lecture rooms/halls are equipped with air-conditioner. Hence, it becomes a norm/part of life for them to be surrounded by the comforts of air-conditioners.

Since children and teens have been growing in environment in air-conditioners, eventually, it becomes a habit. Thus, asking them to use fan and you will see their reaction like this" What the shell?! Are you kidding me?!"

It's true that we can get the cooling sensation now from the air conditioner, but in the long run, the weather will get even hotter and our future generation is going to suffer because of our expensive habits.

Thus, think before using air conditioner; Save the earth, reduce suffering for the future generations, use FANS.

Emergency Mail Or Enslaved Mail

E-mail has been widely used in today’s world. It is usually used to maintain core social networks, particularly when alters live at a distance.

E-mail is beneficial because it aids to provide a way to exchange information between two of more people with no set-up costs and that is generally far less expensive than physical meetings or phone calls.

Users can also decide when and how much time they will spend dealing with any associated information.

However, e-mail can lead to some well-known problems.

Loss of Content - which means that the context is lost forever, there is no way to get the text back.
Information overload - E-mail is a push technology — the sender controls who receives the information. Convenient availability of mailing list and the use of "copy all" can lead to people receiving unwanted or irrelevant information of no use to them.
Inconsistency - Emails can duplicate information. This can be a problem when a large team is working on documents and information while not in constant contact with the other members of their team for business unit.

In addition, because of the very low cost of sending email, spammers can send hundreds of millions of email each day over and inexpensive Internet connection.

Despite these disadvantages, e-mail has become the most widely used medium of communication within the business world. Hence, letters are losing their value as people acquire fast and efficient mails instead.

Download – Receive and Save?

What comes to your mind when you first thought of a movie?
Are you willing to spend at least $6 to a maximum cost of $10 for a movie ticket?
Are you willing to spend your precious time amid the crowd to queue up for those tickets?
Or do you simply switch on your computer system and download the desired movie?

I probably think that most of us here today will choose to download movies and/or songs and not to spend money on such short term entertainment.

Have you ever wondered whether it was safe to open a file attached to an e-mail sent by your friend or to get your favourite screensaver from the Web, or download music or video files?

Let me now share with you people the advantages and disadvantages of downloading.

The few advantages are that it is convenient. Yep, convenient!
As long as you have an internet connection, you can start your downloading process anywhere by a means of a computer system or a device which can access “Wi-Fi”. It also saves time.
Downloading the items that you want is faster and much more efficient than going out to purchase those things personally. It is also fool-proofed! It is easy to download and not complicated at all!

Sure! Downloading movies and audio files online have its conveniences and advantages. However we must remember that it is illegal! That’s right it’s illegal!
Most of the websites if not all websites that provide free downloads are illegal.
Secondly there is a risk of having computer viruses creep into your systems unknowingly. You may not know that the various downloads will contain virus, viruses known as Trojan horse, Worm and other Spywares.
There is also the issue of copying Copyrighted materials, intrusion of piracy is on the line and if you are not careful, you may be sued over this.
If we really love the movies and the actors in it, we should then continue to support them by going down to the movies and paying to watch them as they will then earn more and there may even be a sequel to the movie should viewership ratings hit a high.

Remember you have the choice to download or to take the right path down the road. But bear in mind that you need to bear the consequences should you really decide to download movies or audio files online.

Remember, what are you really burning?

Hey PEOPLE, glad you are still here. GUESS WHAT?! I will be touching on internet part B, a continuous from part A; However, not on the same topics.

Starting from CHATROOMS, the most common chat rooms-msn?? And what else?? I am not too sure.

There is too many, no in fact too much to be sure. Pros of chat room??
Easy way to talk to people, its free, convenient etc etc.

OBVIOUSLY, I am not here to tell you more on the pros. Thus moving on to cons. If you guys haven’t notice, chat rooms can be pretty DANGEROUS. In what sense? Sometimes you do not even know the person you are talking too.
It’s true. It happens to me most of the time. Reason- people like to use all sorts of nicknames when they create their account. It is also highly accessible thus it is easy to get hold of other people accounts too.

You get what I mean?

Most of the time the people I add into my account are the people I think I can’t figure out who they are. THEREFORE, I appreciate people who use their own names to create their accounts.

FACEBOOK anyone?? Who doesn’t know facebook?? Facebook is just like tagged, Friendster, neopets etc. It is just another website for you to interact with your friends, strangers internationally. Some people get obsess with it, probably because of the games. I admit. I was a victim.
FUN?? Not really, but thrilling.
Having the DESIRE to move from stage to stage, beating high scores, breaking records, winning trophies.
Doing all this lame stuff aimlessly.
Why don’t meet up with friends, have a gathering outside, eat out, chat, isn’t it much healthier? You get what I mean?

Cyber bullies. Sounds familiar to you? Was a victim before? Bullies sounds like a big and powerful word to you, actually they are just COWARDS. Cyber bullies send e-mails or instant messages containing insults or threats directly to a person. They may also spread HATEFUL comments about a person through e-mail, instant messaging or postings on Web sites and online diaries.

How to stop them? HONESTLY, I don’t know how. Only encouragement is to not to take it to heart. Let it not hurtyou-because they don’t mean anything. Main motives of cyber bullies, vent their anger, that’s it.

A place with many different books.

Have you been to the library before? Then you might have encountered many times that you simply couldn’t find the book that you have been looking for, am I right?

Therefore, today we’ll be discussing about the pros and cons about using library or Internet to search for information.

With the Internet, I’m sure life is so much simpler! But years ago, when Internet is not available, how did the people then search for the information that they want? Through books in library? So why is it that people nowadays don’t go to the library?

Let’s list down the advantages and disadvantages…

Advantages

1) Internet is so much faster than searching through shelves and shelves of books.
2) The problem of Copyrighting is not so serious in a library as compared to the internet. Seldom do u have someone who photocopies the whole book but you can definitely see people copying the whole webpage.
3) Library is good as not all information can be found on Internet. Eg. Novels

Disadvantages
1) There are many reference numbers for us to search for in the library, so many that we often give up searching for a particular book.

2) We might not be able understand how to read the reference numbers.

3) There might be a lot of time wastage just to search for that book.

4) Not every library has that particular book that you are looking for.

5) Books might not be available everytime you look for it. Other people might have borrowed it before you, causing a hassle to search in other libraries.

So with this, there is no clear stand whether Internet of

Library is better. But if you want to search for history or knowledge’s, Wikipedia is a good source.

If you love to read books, the library will probably be a good place to go. Do cherish all the resources available for you now! (:

DO YOU LOVE TV?

With the era that we are living in, I am very sure that any 3 years-old would know what is a television (TV).

Television is not the main thing we are talking about, it is the television programme that attract many people like children, adult and elderly -Different people.

Why is television programme interesting than the outdoor activities?

IT IS SAID THAT TV IS SOURCE OF INFORMATION, KNOWLEDGE, LEISURE & A FORM OF RESTING, AND A FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT. DOES IT TRUE TO YOU?

Advantages
We can have a clear idea that what is happening in the world, we can have live information about the several events like sports and any other good or bad events happening in the world.

One can have a weather forecast and accordingly plan several things before time.

It is also a good source of entertainment which is very cheap and within the access of every one.

Television has shrunk the distance of the world you can watch what is happening several thousand miles away from you.

So in conclusion, it provides us with information from all over the world.It is a huge source of informations, knowledge and entertainment too!

HOWEVER WE DO NOT FOCUS IN THE ADVANTAGES AS MANY WOULD ALREADY KNEW ?

Disadvantages

Watching too much of television also affects one's eye and nerves. -(Bad for health)

Television creates such a spell on children and in some cases it also effects the elders that their personal opinion waver after listening to other's opinions. -(Influcent one's person away of thinking and opinions)

Having the impression that whatever that is shown on TV is always right. But many a times, its is not the case. For example, news of gunshot fires in schools that cause many deaths and the rise of teenage suicidal in Japan. These are some news that the public will encounter when they are watching the news. (-some might be true however some might be not true -false fact?)

Having the knowledge and the awareness that such tragedies are happening on the other side of the world, what kind of impact will it have on the fresh and pure minds?

Of course there are many benefits but it doesn't mean that everything about it, is good.

Think about it again...

Home Station Games?

This is probably the common scene in some homes or in some game stores. Many parents or relatives may have given their children or others these machines as birthday present or as reward.
If anyone asked me “what are some advantages of getting a play station or an Xbox”, I think the only answer would be it has a bigger screen.
As for the disadvantages, I could just list them out; - Increase in myopia rate
- Children may get addicted, hence it will affect studies
- Not focus in class/work.
- Children maybe introvert after a period of time (for extreme cases)

From a parent’s point of view, they rather have their kids get addicted to the games than them getting into trouble outside. Yes, to some, it succeeded in keeping them at home. However, not many are still interested after playing for a period of time. When kids get addicted, they have less opportunity to interact with their friends. Hence, in future, it would be difficult to adapt and live in new environment as they lack of social skills.

Thus, I feel that kids should not play Play Station too much, especially children under age of 10. Although some parents may want to bind their children at home via games, it is still advisable by doctors and teachers that kids should spend more time outdoors than indoors.
That’s what the new generation is lacking; outdoor time.

Desktop & Notebook (Laptop)

As the technology advances, desktops are losing its footing to laptop in the market. Even though the desktop has become much smaller, faster and unique in design, the laptop had been improving as well.

I bet I do not have to elaborate about the advantages of desktops and laptops. Hence, I’ll be talking briefly about their disadvantages.

Cons of Desktops:
-Consisted of different big and bulky parts, unable to carry around( not portable)
-Big and bulky very heavy, inconvenience , unappealing

Cons of Laptops:
-Lots of heat is generated and that can be easily felt.
-Limited battery life which needs power to charge the laptop.
-Limited speed, memory and graphic ect.

Laptops are mainly used for students to study and do research. Desktops are mainly for everything, including gaming. However, students used their laptop to game while some used them to download many things such as movies and music. Hence, this makes the laptop to be overloaded and maybe even involved with illegal downloading.

Last but not least, there are some laptops with has the crystal bright screen. This particular screen damages the user’s eyes quite easily. Nevertheless, using desktops/laptops for a long period of time can damage eyesight as well. Well, you guy please remember to give ur eyes a 45 min break. Look at far green scenery.

Both desktops and laptops are wonderful creations for people. However, it is up to the user to decide the uses of them. Remember to take consistent breaks if you’re going to use the desktop/laptop for quite some time! Do some stretching!

Handy Games

Does this look familiar? Have you been playing it in the train to kill time too?

I bet many people have seen someone carrying a psp or intend in public places. These handy games are pretty popular among the new generation, as young as 6 and as old as 60.

Advantages of psp:- They help to kill time/boredom.-Fit in the trend.-Multi function purpose (can be a mp3 as well)

However, it does have its disadvantages as well, such as:-Increase myopia-Become a hazard/nuisance to people around.

Let me explain a bit more on ‘Become a hazard to people around’. When people start to play their handy games, most people, are paying more attention to their games than their environment. Hence, they put their own life at risk when they are playing their games every now and then, especially when they are crossing the roads.

Secondly, how can playing psp be nuisance to people around? Well, it creates an amount of problem when people, especially teens, just stand next to the door of the train and refused to move inside the train. This is because they want something to lie on so that they can play their games. This causes obstruction to the people boarding the train.

Despite all the disadvantages, the new generations are still pretty addicted to them. I feel that the reason for the addiction is because of the consistent release of new and challenging games into the market.

Handy games are good tools to kill time, but limit the usage and do not get addicted.

Of course there are many many more but that’s not the point. Point is, what is MP3?

Is it simply something for us to listen to music, watch video, record sound?

The term MP3 is actually a reference shortened from the official Moving Picture Experts Group-1 Audio Layer 3
Did you know that MP3 was first proposed in 1979? And in 1988, a wide range of such hardware for speech is in the market. It took them so many years to produce an appliance that is able to transmit sound from a hardware to your ear.
It took them so many years till it was able to demonstrate the first real time hardware decoding of compressed audio. And on July 7, 1994, it was the release of the first software MP3 encoder called I3enc. And the term MP3 is actually a filename extention that enabled many people to encode and play back MP3 files on their PCs (.mp3).
Because of the relatively small hard drives back then (~500 MB), compression was essential to store non-instrument based music for playback on computer.

From the first half of 1994 through the late 1990s, MP3 files began to spread on the Internet. The popularity of MP3s began to rise rapidly with the advent of Nullsoft's audio player Winamp (released in 1997), and the Unix audio player mpg123. In 1998, the Rio PMP300, one of the first portable MP3 players was released, despite legal efforts by the RIAA.

In November 1997, the website mp3.com was offering thousands of MP3s for free.[18] The small size of MP3 files enabled widespread peer-to-peer file sharing of music ripped from compact discs, which would have previously been nearly impossible.

Is this something new to everyone here? From the history of MP3, it is very clearly stated that since the 90s, creating and sharing MP3s resulted in widespread copyright infringement. Since then, major record companies came up with a term called “music piracy”.

In fact, piracy started because of something called “Monkey see, Monkey do”. Because of this, we have been affected by those who started downloading files illegally in the 90s. Websites that allows us to download free music is till now ILLEGAL!

So, to all out there who doesn’t realize how serious it is to download free music rather than getting a copy of the album themselves is as good as copyrighting.

Some ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES of MP3:

ADVANTAGES
1) Ease boredom during travelling time
2) Relaxes one’s mind with the different genre of music preferred by the person
3) Convenient
4) Reasonably priced
5) A great variety to choose from
6) Mass storage (up to 120GB)
7) Many more….

DISADVANTAGES
1) Harmful to the ear when the volume is blasted to the maximum, to the extend that they cannot hear high/low frequency sounds
2) Temptation to download illegally when one cannot afford to buy the album
3) Violating the copyright laws
4) Unfair to many music artistes

GPRS - What is that? Do you know?

True facts about GPRS (General Packet Radio Service):
GPRS is a packet oriented mobile data service available to users of the cellular communication
Systems, global system for mobile communications (GSM), as well as in the 3G systems.
It is also a very widely deployed wireless data service.

GPRS upgrades GSM data services providing:
-Multimedia messaging service (MMS)
-Short message service (SMS)
-Instant messaging
-Internet applications for devices
And many more!

One fact that many do not know is that if we SMS over GPRS, an SMS transmission speed of about 30 SMS messages per minute may be achieved.
This is much faster than using the ordinary SMS over GSM, whose SMS transmission speed is about 6 to 10 SMS messages per minute.

I believe GPRS is invented for the convenience of people due to globalisation? The World is so big, yet we can actually contact other people in different part of the world! How is this possible? Through systems such as GPRS & Internet Broadband, this is advancement
through the centuries to be able to reach people whom we can never reach if we were in the past.
We can also collect datas and exchange knowledges simply surfing in the Internet. You can find almost anything that you can ever think of
simply surfing the Internet. How great is that?!
Although GPRS has helped us in many ways, it also has its disadvantages…

GPRS is able to locating cars and vehicles as a tracking device. So is it safe? Are you being tracked by people who you don't know?
You’ll probably be questioning about this but yes! It’s true! There are cases whereby vehicles were stolen using this technology. Still not convinced?
You can always surf the Internet’s news and plenty of such cases will be listed down for you.

Controlling or being controlled?‏

I’m sorry to make this statement now only but all these posts my teammates and myself wrote are merely from our own view of point and what do we observe around us only. These posts maybe written based on theories, or what we think is happening. I’m sorry that any of the posts does not agree with your point of view. Hence, your feedback is important to us to write a better post in future.

In this modern society, it’s difficult not to have a phone. One has to consistently upgrade his phone in order to be in the trend. Hence, colourless phones and along with the first few generation of phone are not very common with the teenages or businessman now. Perhaps, it’s popular among the army guys?

Well, I feel that the new generation is being controlled by the trend, by the features of a phone. Thus, it results in us changing of phone frequently.
The keywords between controlled and being controlled are need and want.

When one needs a phone, his world includes phone in his daily life. Soon, his life is being controlled by the phone. However, when one wants a phone, his world may and may not include phone. This is dependent on what is the role of the phone the user is giving to the phone.

Why are some able to live without a phone,while some seemed to be 'living' on their phones? Well, the reason is how much roles one give his phones. If you give your phone too much roles, your life will get controlled by it sooner or later. Phones are merely tools to smoothen our lives, thus, I feel that one shouldn’t get too dependent on them as well.

SMS= Send Messages Sent or So Much Shorter?

“ Beep” ,a handphone rang. The next moment, the user will check the phone and reply the sms. Nowadays, many people are using sms everyday. So, what does sms stand for?
I bet many of my friends, including myself, do not know what it stands for. SMS actually stands for Short Messages Service. Some with humor, may think it stands for So Much Shorter or Singles Meet Single?

Let me ask this question to all handphone owners; How much sms do you use every day, week and in a month?
For myself, I used on average of 20 sms per day, 250 sms per week and most of the time is under 800 sms every month. I’m sure this is some of the teenagers’ usage as well. There are many extreme cases where they used over 2000 sms every month, resulting to a bomb for their bill.

Why some people are not able to use the sms within the limit given and others had exceeded the limit so much that results to a huge bill?

Pro of sms: Convenient, spread information quickly, cheap
Con of sms: weakens language, not focus and results in laziness and huge bill.

What do I mean by weakens language? When teens sms, they would use short forms. Some of the example are LOL( Laugh Out Loud), brb (Be Right Back) , gtg ( got to go) or tml (tomorrow). These short forms hinder them from learning the full form of words and the right grammars. Thus, it weakens their language.

SMS is useful at times, an excellent tool provided one do not overuse it and become obsessed with it. Well, I observed some ‘sms-obsession’ symptoms.-Check your phone every now and then (15 to 30minutes)-playing with your phone-stare at the phone very often-carries the phone around anywhere you go

This list may not be all true, but if you find yourself to have one of the symptoms, be careful! Remember, SMS is just a tool to help you not to harm you.

Saving contacts in phones. Easy or lazy?

As the world and Singapore modernize, almost everyone has at least one handphone. The technology has become so advanced that there are so many variety of phones in the market now. When I walked on the streets of Orchard Road, I would always see businessmen or teenagers, holding one handphone in their hands, calling or texting their friends from time to time

Let me post this question to all who owns a phone, regardless colourless or coloured phone. What if one day, your handphone is spoilt, along with your Sim card, are you still able to contact your friends?

The reason why I posted that question is because this is an illustration that people are too dependent on technology nowadays. Some may say that they had another copy of the contacts in a book. However, how many people actually have another set of backup copy? Even for myself, I do not have a backup copy when my phone died on me a few days ago.
These would be some common replies when I asked teenagers do they keep a backup copy of their contacts.

A: Huh? Copying contacts out in a book? So old biang (old version)

B: it’s so troublesome. I rather ask my friends send me their numbers again.

These are some of the common replies. Even though the technology is very advanced now, handphone still have its expiry date and eventually spoilt.

No doubt, saving contacts in phone is easy and convenience. In addition, user can call his friends anywhere at any time. Saving contacts in phone brings convenience to people. However, what happened if our phones are spoilt without a warning. When the phone is spoilt, the contacts in the phone may be lost when the user sent it for repair.

At this situation, most of us would grumble that the phone bringing them so much inconvenience .However, how many exactly reflected about why the breakdown of phone brought so much problem? In the past, before handphone was invented, people lived well without handphones. Why would a handphone affect a person’s life so much? Is it because people depend too much on it or has people slowly become enslaved by the muilt-functions of a phone?

Well, I feel that people has gotten used to the multi functions of the phone and thus, making us too dependent on the phone. When the phone is spoilt, some of the people feel helpless and frustrated. Many would send the phone for repair immediately, maybe a small number find to be not a problem.

There’s a few ways to prevent losing your contacts. Here’s two ways:- Copy them out in a book.- Print them out from your phone.

It's as if the technology can sense the users' needs for phone. Why do I say so? This is because when one relies on the phone too much; the phone will break down, driving the user mad. Well, I find it pretty true when my phone suddenly breaks down just when I need to use it to do my project work.
In short, phones are tools to help people’s life, not to add trouble to life when they are spoilt. Do you find that you’re dependent on your phone?
